At 7:30 p.m. April 29, St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir of London, on their first U.S. tour in over a decade, will be performing at Valparaiso University’s Chapel of the Resurrection.
Professor of Music, Director of the Institute of Liturgical Studies, and Director of Chapel Music at Valparaiso University, Lorraine Brugh, is very excited about the performance to come to Valparaiso University. “This is the choir’s first U.S. tour in about 15 years, and the choir has a 500-year history,” said Brugh.
The Cathedral choir consists of 30 boy treble Choristers, eight probationers and 12 Vicars Choral. All of them are professional adult singers who sing the alto, tenor and bass sections. Along with that, according to Brugh, “the choir is made up of men and boys, the sopranos, which is typically a female part, is sung by the boys in the choir, and sung in Anglican tradition.”
St. Paul’s Cathedral choir is one of England’s oldest and most respected choirs and has been around since 1127 A.D., when it was founded by Bishop of London Richard Belmeis. Since then, St. Paul’s Cathedral choir performs daily services and at royal occasions as well. “The choir typically sings at coronations and royal events in England,” Brugh said.
Although no one will be crowned at Valparaiso University’s Chapel of the Resurrection, the St. Paul’s Cathedral choir will be putting on quite a show. According to Brugh, “For this event, half of the program will be traditional songs, the other half will be modern commissions written for St. Paul’s Cathedral.”
Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University will be a very welcoming setting for St Paul’s Cathedral choir to perform at, due to the construction of the building and how the acoustics travel throughout. “The space at the chapel is very similarly built to the chapels that typically appear in Europe. The acoustics are amazing and we see a high amount of resonance with the quality of sound,” said Brugh.
Brugh believes that the residents of northwest Indiana are very lucky to have the St. Paul’s Cathedral choir of London touring to Valparaiso University because “the audience can get a taste of England without going over there,” said Brugh.
